Ministry Today Magazine

Writer's Guidelines
Ministry Today magazine is discerning analysis for innovative church leaders. Launched in 1983 by Charisma magazine founder Stephen Strang, Ministry Today serves as a professional journal for pastors and church leaders, providing information on news, trends and resources relevant to 21st-century ministry.

Our readers: Our readers are primarily pastors and church leaders representing a broad swath of evangelical Christianity. Although the magazine has historically served a largely charismatic/Pentecostal readership, since its relaunch in 2006, it has been our goal to strategically engage a broader readership—theologically, ethnically and generationally.

Our structure. As you examine the pages of Ministry Today, note that the magazine is divided into several sections containing several types of articles: columns, Tips&Trends, features and executive summaries.

Columns: We do not accept unsolicited columns or editorials.

Tips&Trends: This section includes brief articles examining news, trends and the practical aspects of everyday ministry, such as communication, leadership, world (missions), ethics, money, media, etc. We also accept personality profiles on innovative leaders in the “trendsetter” category of Tips&Trends. Articles in this section are 1,500 words or fewer.
Features: Our main feature stories in Ministry Today are in-depth critical analyses of trends, usually including interviews, research and statistics that help our readers navigate issues facing the church today. Feature articles are 2,500 words or fewer.

Executive Summaries: Also known as reviews, our executive summaries provide busy readers with a nutshell gist of books on leadership, management, trends, theology, culture, society, etc. [Note: We do not review devotionals, self-help, fiction, health and fitness, etc. With the large number of books published every year, we are primarily on the lookout for books by leaders, for leaders on topics that are of interest to leaders.] Executive summaries are 350 words. Send an e-mail query to receive our executive summary Microsoft Word template.

Our writersEach year, freelancers write 80 percent of our articles, but we assign most of these to writers who have established themselves with us. In most cases, we only give article assignments to writers with published clips. We do not publish sermons, poetry or fiction. However, feel free to propose articles, based on the information provided above.

Our Procedure. Ministry Today magazine does not accept or reply to unsolicited manuscripts. Writers may send query letters or query e-mails that briefly describe and outline a proposed article. A good article proposal will include answers to the following questions: What “big picture” question will be addressed in the article? What resources will be explored to answer that question? What people will be interviewed? What likely conclusions will be reached? How is this article specifically related to ministry leadership?
